Kyung-mi wasn't exactly shocked that Sealight, in their infinite wisdom, hadn't even planned a Delilah comeback yet - but was requesting full look-books from them for said unplanned comeback. Kyung-mi tried to explain to them that they needed a bit more information. For instance, would they die in the humid Seoul summer heat if they picked fluffy sweaters during January? Was the song they were promoting cute or sexy, or something in-between? Did they want each member to look like a girl crush or like a present for a boy? What on earth were they supposed to even fucking do?! Just because CM was in shambles didn't mean they needed to mismanage their people, too!

After getting no information from any of their higher-ups, Kyung-mi sucked up their pride and set up a meeting with the Delilah manager. Kyung-mi didn't like dealing with their manager. To start, Kyung-mi was at least five years older than him, and just looking at the man made them feel like they were speaking to a child genius of some sort. It unsettled Kyung-mi, made them feel like they'd somehow failed at life. They weren't a failure! They had a loving partner (after nearly ten years of flailing around with useless types), a good job, and maybe this would be the year they found a higher purpose than just putting falsies on women's eyes and in women's dresses. There was a change in the wind, and Kyung-mi wanted to be there.

For now, they had to figure out what to outfit Delilah in for their mystery comeback. They brought the lookbooks they'd constructed for a few recent female-based comebacks - one from Kakyuu's MAMA performances, one from Vanilla's comeback for both Camilla and Celeste, and the complete set of Delilah lookbooks from their last comeback. Resting back in their chair as they pulled all of these tomes out of their book bag, they let their dark brown hair fall into their face. They weren't wearing a wig today - they'd planned on popping out of the office the second this meeting was over to do some shopping for new wigs. New Year's Sales! They couldn't miss this, not for themselves and not for Sealight.

"Thanks for agreeing to see me, Kyu-Byul," Kyung-mi began as they finally pulled out the last of the nine Delilah lookbooks. "I don't know if you have any particular insight for me, but the management seems to want Delilah's appearance designed and ready to go before they give me any clue as to what they're doing. I know if anyone would know where things are going" (it would probably be Jianyi but they knew they'd get reamed by management for asking the actual band when they were coming back - no matter how you meant it, that always sounded harsh) "it would be you."

a normal work day.
for the young man, everyday tended to be a normal work day because there wasn't much he did instead of working - maybe thinking, reading some essential masterpieces of philosophic literature and of science or whatever one was expecting him to do when he had some time off.
really, kyu-byul almost lived in the company's building, and even as this was a stated fact, there weren't many people who would maintain they would know him ... some sort of well. he seemed to be a mystery, but he was quite good in his job.

today, it was another work day - the only difference might be that he wasn't as much with the girls he managed as usual. he had agreed to meet sealight's stylist, for whatever reason they actually need his help - he only admitted that it was more efficient to ask him than any other higher up (which, in his eyes, were working absolutely poorly, it was no use to keep things within the company a secret).

walking to the place they would meet, the young man knocked shortly before he entered and sat down.
"there's no point in refusing" kyu-byul answered the greeting with a vague smile. he was steadily smiling, although it didn't improve any impression he made, actually. but maybe, like that, he could make at least some people believe he would be actually interested in what they say.
in this case, it might be true.
listening to their words while observing carefully what they made, a short glimpse to identify the look-books, he got the situatioon, a bit clearer than before entering the room. so, it was some sort of progress, huh?
... well, at least, it proved that anybody above kyu-byul wasn't particularly intelligent. in fact, the ones kyung-mi asked.
a short nod was his response to the 'trust' in his knowledge the stylist showed (though kyu-byul would rather call it a pressure to ask him). "the reason why they don't tell is, according to me, they don't have a specific plan, either" he clearly said, without the blink of the eye or even lowering his voice. "there're some different concepts, up from late winter to early spring, depending where it'd be finally set" he explained, furthermore, with a thoughtful face. his eyes were scanning the look-books in front of him, without touching them or turning pages, slowly switching from one to another.
"it, obviously, has to be kind of outstanding, which is a very vague concept, i admit" he then said while his eyes were looking at the other person again. "is there anything in your mind?" he actually asked the stylist. the young man wasn't experienced in any kind of fashion or styling, at least not really, so it was useless if he was collecting ideas on his own.

[I'M SO SORRY THIS ALIEN MAKES KYUNG-MI FEELS LIKE THAT - KYU-BYUL'S JUST ... /coooooooughs the only fail is he. / hopefully the information he gives aren't all wrong, just correct me if something has to be edited!]

"There's no point in refusing."

Okay, it was things like that, that statement was the kind of thing that disturbed Kyung-mi about the new Delilah manager. What kind of manager told people that there was no point in refusing an invitation for a meeting? There were definitely points - if the meeting conflicted with another, if it was with another sasaeng... but if Kyu-Byul knew a reason not to refuse Kyung-mi... that just made this even stranger. His placid smile didn't elucidate anything about the cryptic phrase, and they simply sat down, preferring to move past that bizarre introduction.

They didn't have a specific plan. Kyung-mi, unlike Kyu-Byul, was, emotionally, a fairly open book, and they couldn't stop the deadpan, disbelieving look that slammed onto their face. Their lip curled in annoyance. "Late winter concepts are entirely different from early spring concepts, do they have any - no. Not going to go down that road." Kyung-mi was trying to rein in their emotions more, partially because they'd learned how badly not reining them in could go from the absolute disaster that was ST*R. The other part... was because they genuinely weren't sure whether to trust Kyu-Byul or not. Kyu-Byul didn't seem like a snitch. They probably wouldn't tell management that Kyung-mi Kwon, paparazzi magnet, the person who stole a boat (that wouldn't die, would it?), but he could easily make life even more difficult for Kyung-mi. He could just start rejecting ideas, going to other stylists, planting the seeds that something was wrong with them, and poof. There went the new great life.

It had to be outstanding. No fucking kidding. Sometimes Kyung-mi wondered if the child genius thing was an act. "We can't go to the cuteness well again." It was a controversial idea to sell to the manager of Delilah. Cute was their bread and butter. But. "ROSEGOLD's comeback went well, but it would have crushed Delilah's sales had Mitsuki not collapsed. They had to cut all of their promotions - and they still almost matched their debut sales. They're going to corner that cute-sweet vibe for a while now." Kyung-mi pointed to the Kakyuu lookbook. "I brought this because... well, Delilah are all women now. Some of them are in their late twenties. It's about time we sell them like that."

The idea itself could backfire horribly. It could be a disaster. Cute had made Delilah the nation's girl group. They hadn't stagnated, but the risk was there, especially now with the competition from not just ROSEGOLD - Miracle was somehow picking up fans despite the presence of a white chick in the group, BOSS was set to re-debut Queens any day now, and more groups would pop up to fill a void if Delilah faltered. They needed to go for the fences.

kyu-byul always considered it as most interesting to observe the other people's reaction to what he said (about which he never thought twice, he considered his first choice as ultimate) - and especially when they did not react in particular.
his eyes still following the other's movements, he waited for them to start with whatever phrase. and obviously, kyu-byul had entered a field other people would consider it was 'difficult', but while kyung-mi didn't seem to have enough words to blame, the younger one was as calm as falling snow.
and most likely even as cold.

carefully, he listened to their explanations without the blink of an eye. kyu-byul didn't feel particularly uncomfortable, but on the other hand, he never felt anything too strong. calculations were his fine point, the emotional part could be done by someone else.
he listened to observations he already made, but risking something new ... huh. surely he had thought about that, sometimes, but it was something different to hear it. reaching his hand out for the lookbook of kakyuu, he started to browse, silently. their ceo had told him to do anything to get delilah back to their respective position, if he remembered right. but that didn't include experiments, they hadn't have time to loose anything.
"what makes you so confident about that?" he asked. was there evidence? intuition he didn't possess? he looked directly into the eyes of the other, waiting for their answer. "why shouldn't they be marked as rosegold-copies, then? where's the singularity?" even when they would try something else, 'something else' was too vague.

Kyung-mi knew they were saying a lot that could be construed poorly right now - for instance, questioning why management didn't understand the differences between a spring and late winter comeback could be seen as a mild form of insubordination. But the more they talked, the more they were unsure what, exactly, Kyu-Byul was even taking from this. Their eyes focused too much on them, and not in an invasive way, but in an unsettling one. Kyung-mi knew it wasn't their presentation or gender - their eyes weren't moving from his face when they focused on him. No staring at the boobs or anything. Kyu-Byul did take the Kakyuu lookbook and flip through it placidly - god, Kyung-mi wished Takumi was here. He could fill this empty space in the conversation with some lovely talk about his songs, or his dog, or Sakura, or anything. Kyung-mi just liked being glued to Takumi's hip.

"what makes you so confident about that?"

Kyung-mi frowned. "Well, due to the nature of many legal documents I signed with both CM and Sealight, I can't really talk about any unreleased material or any rumours I may have heard from my partner about their forthcoming releases." Their relationship was a blessing and a curse. "But I don't see ROSEGOLD coming back from this hiatus with an edgy look. They are rapidly closing in on Delilah's bread and butter - cuteness that's targeted to women, not men. Delilah has been on the market for about five years now, and the pop market changes constantly. It's like fashion." Kyung-mi knew that they would not be denied on the strength of their knowledge of fashion. They adjusted the fascinator on their wig, just to further pull in that point. "If you want to remain on top, you have to adapt, you have to take into account your surroundings. If you don't adapt, you die." They shrugged. "Delilah has had almost no competition the past few years. ROSEGOLD is their first real threat. You don't crush a threat by doing more of the same."

Kyung-mi DID like ROSEGOLD, truly. But this was all business. "If they copy ROSEGOLD, it's all over. ROSEGOLD sets the trends now. Delilah is the group that needs to set the trends for all the other nugus. If we let ROSEGOLD have their niche, we can still be the dominant voice. If we try to enter their niche, they are the dominant voice and are setting the narrative." Kyung-mi clasped their hands together. "What do you think? You said that being seen as a ROSEGOLD-copy might not be a bad thing, what brings that conclusion?"

it was hard to perceive what kyu-byul actually wanted to achieve. making the other person upset, so they were the first one to admit a flaw? a weak point? well, in this case, it would be only bothering - he wanted the optimal result, after all, so what was the point in that? nothing.
he only waited for the chance to come, a phrase, perhaps, that would lead him further - delilah had to be perfect, and even though the outcome of the mamas weren't 'ideal', they were a beginning. they just had to use it in the right way.

the pink-haired was silent for the passing minutes, just listened to the other with several silent nods every then and now, assuring that he was indeed listening - as if it wasn't the only thing he did for most of the time.
of course he had to ... kind of 'trust' the stylist in this case, they were the one who was way more familiar with the market, just as they proved once more as they explained in detail what would work and what not. or just rather what wouldn't work.

"so you're saying that we can't enter their space, but we can't go back to what's been their concept for so long, too" he summed up what the other had said - in his own way. it seemed to be reasonable to him, delilah's concept ... was sold out. at least for them, even though he could imagine that rosegold would have a chance with it, at least for a few comebacks - even though he assumed that there would be some backlash as well, it hadn't been her style, right?
he sighed, slightly, as he started to pay more attention to the lookbooks, looking at them with more interest - although this, again, was hard to perceive. he never changed his face, not on regular base, it was a perfect pokerface. somehow, he still looked like a child who was supposed to fit an adult's role.
and he was just right with it.

"because they'll do better" was the almost rapid answer of the manager. well, he hadn't been with the girls for 'very' long, it was just about a year since he was in charge of them, but expectations were expectations. if the ceo still believed they could pull it off, they'd better do. it hadn't the least to do with 'trust' and 'belief' he would have in them, not ... in the common sense. "but i agree we can't do the same thing over and over" kyu-byul finally admitted as he just looked at delilah's lookbook of their latest comeback. something different ... admittingly, he wasn't the most creative head in the entire building, he never spent much time on such things, anyway. "change, but what kind?" he said, almost with a tone of secondary remark. "we've to consider boss' queens as well." how many fans stayed loyal to their idols after such an incident? he couldn't tell, but the net was tightened.

"so you're saying that we can't enter their space, but we can't go back to what's been their concept for so long, too"

"Right," Kyung-mi responded. In a manner of speaking, yes. They had to let ROSEGOLD flounder in the pool they made themselves, not splash in and create a massive wave that tanked them both. But moving to an empty pool... that would bring benefits. "Let's face it. Delilah is adult women now. Mii is 28 for God's sake. People aren't going to be too charmed by cutesy faces for much longer. Her solo song was a good step in the right direction - and the follow-up album by the whole band really reflected a more mature sound without being 'sexy' or 'edgy'." Oh they were hitting on something here. They could feel it in their heads, something was bubbling up, something that didn't require winter or spring styling in the slightest. They still couldn't tell if Kyu-Byul was on their page at all, as they kept staring down at the lookbooks. Maybe Kyu-Byul was a former trainee set to debut with VCB? The blankness would make sense, then.

Being a ROSEGOLD copy might not be bad to Kyu-Byul, however, because they'd do better. Kyung-mi narrowed their eyes, making a confused face. "...um... no offense... but they might not." 'Doing better' was not a metric that they should be considering when planning a comeback! "ST*R's last comeback was better than MMM's, but MMM killed them because of different factors." Kyung-mi knew they were one of those factors, but simply brushed a hand through their hair, preferring to lay the blame entirely at Eunji and Kunwoo's feet. Maybe if they'd noticed how wonderful their beautiful boyfriend was and didn't treat him like a butt, his anxiety wouldn't have gotten so bad. ...but Kyung-mi liked Eunji and Kunwoo, and couldn't spin that narrative for long. They split the difference mentally and blamed Jinsoo. What did that fucker do anyways, besides punch people and drink milk?

At least he admitted they couldn't do the same thing over and over again. "Right." Kyu-Byul said they had to consider the change, and also take into account Queens. Queens was, definitely, an unknown factor, but Kyung-mi felt like they could extrapolate a bit. "Given that everyone is getting a sexier concept now, I feel like... Queens probably isn't going to go as hard on it based on the scandal. But we can expect something edgier, darker, and sexier, because of the overall BOSS image." Kyung-mi paused. "Kyu-Byul. They're women. They're the idols of women. What if we make them the everywoman? What if we put them in suits and make their concept be 'every woman'?" They immediately grabbed the side of one of the lookbooks and began doodling Jianyi in a suit. "See, that makes them different - their big draw is that they are the nation's girl group, but not because the nation loves them. They love them, I mean - I mean that the nation sees themselves in Delilah! Everyone knows a Jingle, a Sing-Sing, a Mii. Everyone babysat a Siren, everyone had a Mami in their class! And now they're adults, and now they go to work, just like you!"

They turned the page quickly - it was rough, but it was striking. "This might be it. We don't sacrifice anything, but we ramp up the game."

the fact the stylist threw in now was quite telling. not only varied the age range from late teens to almost late twenties, they all were about to become mature. of course, some would keep the high school cutesy concept or whatever, but kyu-byul saw that they had a point. it wasn't ... realistic, not in any way. it was a mere shadow of trying to do something that was quite hopeless to do.
and perhaps, this was just the difference between rosegold and delilah - as simple as it might sounded at first, but delilah had the experience the young girls from rosegold hadn't. instead, the quartet did seem to be rather a cause of scandals ... well, not that he would care much about, but it was quite a benefit for his own group.
quite?
"yeah" he replied shortly to the other's remark about their latest comeback. "could you call it ... 'timeless'?" he asked, somehow adressed to the other, somehow adressed to his own mind. timeless ... but what was considered as 'timeless'? it was just a nice word, nothing lasted forever.

as it seemed, he was wrong - or something like that. different factors? quite so. a vague smile like always replaced the more thoughtful face, as if he was remembering something very funny. and it was almost scary to think of things the young man would actually find ... 'funny'.
"yeah, i think you're right" he only agreed in this case. perhaps, the time was just not the same anymore. not the same ... even thought it was always the same, only different people. the same thrill, the same drill, only changeable protagonists.
this was the idol world.

well, and finally, it got more concrete. the young man wasn't as creative as kyung-mi, he could barely think of different lackish concepts on his own - but nothing more. he stopped looking through the lookbooks and waited for the other to finish what they started.
"i think you pointed this already out" he remarked, quite senseless, as the stylist mentioned the grown-up aspect once again. not that he would mind - it seemed like this was the concept they wanted to go with for this time. 'just like you' was perhaps too much to be said, but he nodded. of course. even though they've been working for plenty years ... if they weren't idols, who would they be?
not a question kyu-byul would think about much.

he looked carefully at the sketch of jianyi in a suit, saying nothing and letting seconds pass like this. "it looks good" was the reply after a while. perhaps that was just the 'timeless' he had in mind. somehow.

Timeless. When Kyu-Byul nailed it, he really nailed it. That was exactly what Delilah needed - something that would transcend the moment-to-moment rush of K-pop ephemera, something that would cement them as legends. Buzzwords could only get you so far after all. "Yeah, timeless. Four-quadrant appeal. Something that, five years from now, people will still be talking about the legendary girl group Delilah - because at this point, they will be and are legends. We just need to make sure that legacy remains secure for as long as possible." Ideally, that would be past when they ceased being a band.

Why Kyu-byul smiled over the scandals ST*R endured, Kyung-mi didn't know, and they let his cryptic remark about them being right slide. Of course Kyung-mi was right. Stupid Kunji, or whatever the media had started calling them, not taking the heat for their partner's obvious mental distress. Something about what he said made them feel like he was lumping Takumi in with the rest of that disaster squad... or maybe that Kyu-byul didn't see anything to pull parallel to Delilah. Delilah's parallel was ROSEGOLD, equally prone to scandal as ST*R. Was he...? Kyung-mi decided he didn't care. It wasn't worth fighting about, especially since they needed to decide on a look for Delilah.

"I know I've already - " Kyung-mi bit their tongue quickly, sketching out the image in their head for all of the women. Every Woman. Every Woman had a job, Every Woman dealt with bullshit from someone, Every Woman was ready to fight for their rights in Korea now. Every Woman needed an anthem. Every Woman needed someone to project onto. Every Woman didn't realize that the corporate world that surrounded them was ready to weaponize their anger to sell them something. Kyung-mi didn't see the harm in acknowledging what they'd known from years of being a politician's 'son'.

Kyu-byul said it looked good. Kyung-mi nodded. Of course it looked good. They were an expert at this point. "And we'll adjust the look to suit each member's personality. Maybe we put Siren in a suit with high-waisted shorts, for her girl crush image? Mii can definitely pull off something a bit more ornate, maybe her and Mami." And Sing-Sing could wear whatever fucking gaudy-ass garbage she insisted on layering over their beautiful work, she wouldn't listen to him anyways.

'as long as possible' ... the young man thought about the words. it was definitely better than 'forever' because nothing lasted forever, and especially in an ever-changing industry such as the entertainment industry, there was nothing for sure.
but ... they could ensure it as safe as possible. as sure as some paths would be followed by a timespan of despair - just as sure as this.
"increasing and improving the marketing could be working as well" he remarked with a calm voice, in an almost playful manner - as if it was a game. obviously, it wasn't, but sometimes, kyu-byul played it as a game.

for a 'timeless' concept, it would be necessary to improve everyone's work - not only the stylist's one with whom he was talking right now, but also the producer's and the idols herself had to be the best they could be - and even better.
he hadn't enough time and use to analyze the 'other group's' actions at this point, though it was quite handy. despite everything, if delilah's comeback was good in many ways, it would surpass anything else with ease.

individual flairs ... yeah. each member something to recognize. everyone had to show their special features, otherwise they would be an anonymous mass. but even people who only followed the entire group around because they were fan of one person only and in specific - they were still the group's success.
"yeah, why not" he nodded with a slight smile, showing he was indeed agreeing. "perhaps we need few more casual outfits, for off-stage appearances, in case the management's agreeing to record few more delilah-only variety shows" he suddenly dropped a thought that was earlier discussed, yet not set in stone. "for various stage outfits, i'd say we need something remarkable, that make each single member as themselves recognizable - something like a personal jewel" kyu-byul suggested as well, pointing at various key points of different outfits - something that repeated itself. just like ... history.
and in this case, hopefully the story of success.
"can you work with that?" the calm eyes asked the stylist.
