it's like playing a game

It was a bitterly cold Friday night in Seoul, the frigid January air chilling anyone who dared to step outside in its thrall. Snow stopped falling for the moment, but the dirty slush still piled around the streets and sidewalks, being kicked down by revelers hustling to get to their next party, workers striving to get home, cram-school cadets dashing towards a home-cooked meal or their next after-school activity. The moon hung high in the sky, a bright dot of yellow paper across a black landscape, only the faintest traces of evening stars peeking through the haze of halogens spilling from each high-rise.

Dan stared at the sky around him for a moment as he stopped near the door to one of his favorite intel-gathering clubs. He felt his ever-present diary's weight, heavy in the left pocket of his favorite trenchcoat, his gloves preventing him from feeling the scratchy cover as he shoved his hands in his pockets. He never entirely dressed correctly for the weather - he misestimated how cold he would be in this thin sweater, but at least he had the coat and the scarf and the steel-toed boots to make up for it. His hair was windswept, but at least out of his face, so he could gaze up at the moon for just a moment. He wished he could see more of the stars. It looked to be a clear, lovely evening, no snow for once, just chill.

But there were more important things, he reminded himself.

A soothsayer with wisdom far beyond his - and biases much too obvious to discount - once described a famous intergalactic port as "a wretched hive of scum and villainy". If any place in Seoul matched that description, it would be this blazingly hot-lit, small box of a club, club vurt. Going into this place was like attending a rave in a bomb shelter, and even someone who generally never had an obstructed view of anything, like Dan, found himself getting oddly claustrophobic there.

However, it was spaces like this that needed the most watching. There were so many people in this concrete space, getting drinks, dancing against each other - the tiniest twitch could give away alien behavior, the smallest movement could betray an entire plan to bring human civilization to its knees. Dan usually hid around in the back with a drink, watching whatever band play, trying to pick up all the tells he'd learned about in his years as a preeminent paranormal investigator. Every so often someone even asked him to dance! That sometimes was fun. Sometimes it was torture. Especially if the person was five feet tall.

Not many people were in here tonight. Must not be a big night for partying. Dan wasn't sure what day it was - he hadn't slept in... two or three days. Maybe he should fix that, but eh. He could sleep later. When the nagging idea that a threat was about to be uncovered stopped scratching at the back of his brain.

It honestly wasn't often that Ted went out on her own. Even when she did go out, she was so busy looking out for Chastity that she didn't enjoy herself as much as she might have otherwise. At least when it was night. The creepers came out and night, and..honestly, she was looking out for herself almost as much as she was looking out for Chastity. But Chastity was safe (hopefully) at work tonight, and Ted had the night off. And she was bored. Thus she decided to stop by one of the local clubs and see what they had to offer.

If it was nice enough, she might drag Chastity along at another time. If not, she'd write it off as a lost cause and consider herself thankful that she'd visited the place alone. The first thing she noticed when she walked in was that it wasn't that busy. She did get herself a drink..but only one, because she could not bring herself to drink any more than that while she was out in public. That might seem contrary to the rest of her image, but it was the honest truth. She liked to party and have fun, but she didn't want to end up on the evening news.

Something did catch her attention though. A dude hanging out in a trenchcoat of all things. "Interesting fashion choice for a place like this, dude." She arched an eyebrow, not sure whether he was just a guy who liked weird fashion or whether he had other reasons for wearing a trenchcoat in a club of all places.

..yes, the girl that was paranoid of creepy men going after her and her cousin was approaching a man who fit the very definition of creepy just by his fashion choices. What was that saying, curiosity killed the cat? It wasn't just curiosity though, it was the fact that in his own odd way, the guy actually struck her as sort of hot. Maybe if he freshened up a little..

"Interesting fashion choice for a place like this, dude."

Dan glanced up from the inside of his gin and tonic, dark eyes settling on a girl about half his height standing next to him, kohl-lined eyes underscoring her blase interest in his fashion. Dan was never good at reading emotions, but this woman - who he recognized but couldn't place why, she wasn't part of the Public Enemy Lists and she wasn't a Swollen Eyeball devotee who foolishly used their own image in their Twitter profile, so... K-pop? Somehow K-pop. Dan looked her over in his confusion before realizing that he'd been staring at a spot above her ear for a good while.

"It was freezing outside," Dan answered truthfully, leaving out the part where the only coats he owned were trenchcoats, and one puffy parka that he refused to wear anymore. He was not going to be mocked for dressing like an MMM member ever again. He took a casual sip of his gin and tonic, eyes not moving away from the dark-haired woman. "You're going to get hypothermia the second you step outside of the club. Survival is imperative in these times." He paused before remembering something he'd learned in high school, from an irritated younger sister. "...do you want my coat?"

He wasn't quite sure where to go from here - the music wasn't starting, and the club's dead atmosphere suggested that Dan wasn't going to get much more information here. But there was the nagging sense of knowing who this woman was, and Dan got so wrapped up in the sensations of his own mind. He didn't like not knowing something, and he especially didn't like that he couldn't place the woman. If he couldn't place her... maybe her mental magicks were already working their insidious poisons on him. She could be fae. With eyes like that, it might very well be a guarantee.

"Dan Berman," Dan said, sticking out his hand to her, "journalist." People reacted better to journalist, he found, than his true lofty title, expert paranormal investigator. "What brings you to club vurt? Do you know the band?"

Well, he did have a point about it being freezing outside, though a trenchcoat was still a weird fashion choice for a club and she wasn't going to let that go. Or..she didn't plan to, until he turned it in a weird direction. Hypotherwhatnow? There was a reason why Ted had no issues dropping out of high school, and 'hypothermia' was one of those terms that she would probably understand a lot easier had she and Chastity stayed in school rather than heading off to South Korea to follow K-pop. This turned out to be the better route for them anyway.

She shook her head when he asked if she wanted his coat. "Nah it's cool, I've dealt with colder shit than this before. Ted Butte, youtuber. We might have seen each other around before." Ted shrugged. The guy did seem vaguely familiar, though she wasn't entirely sure why. But if he was a journalist, he might follow K-pop, which might meant that the two of them had attended K-pop events together before. Though his was the more 'official' sounding job, they essentially had two different methods of going about the same thing - K-pop, and following and reporting on it.

Honestly, Ted would probably be interested in the paranormal investigator bit..once someone explained to her what that actually meant. "I don't go out on my own much. My cousin's working. I wanted to see the town." A part of her second guessed saying what she did - She'd just admitted to going out alone, and this guy's attire, at least, screamed 'creeper'.

She took a couple of steps away from him to put some space between them, but did not travel too far. She wasn't averse to carrying on a conversation or anything, she just didn't want him to try anything. Flirting was one thing, she'd flirt with anything that walked, but she could not help but be extra wary of anyone that gave her an odd vibe after what happened to Chastity

She'd dealt with colder shit than this before - but Dan was starting to get a feel for this girl and why she responded the way she did. She was younger than him, by a good deal, and spoke in the kind of colloquial turn-of-phrase he'd heard from his sister constantly when they were growing up. Her accent suggested midwestern American; 'colder shit' suggested millennial. Her introductory job description basically confirmed it - YouTuber. He may have seen her around before. He took her hand easily. "Probably. Do you go to many events?" He couldn't recall seeing her at fansignings, but from his experience, women tended to not go to Delilah fansigns. He was also now barred from Delilah fansigns, so there was that... "I don't really watch many 'react' videos, where do your specialties lie?"

Ted didn't have a real reason for going out. She was bored, her cousin was at work. Ah, boredom, the great motivator. Dan wasn't sure what boredom entailed, as he had never been bored his entire life - there were always insidious alien vagaries to discover and expose to the world, after all, since humanity was pathetic enough to let supernatural forces infiltrate their world so thoroughly. Everything was research, everything was an opportunity to save the lives of the clueless masses, even the mere act of having a drink with someone half his height could elucidate some great mystery swirling in his head!

Thankfully, he kept that whole speech in his head... but for a second, he thought he didn't, as Ted stepped back a bit. Dan watched the movement and puzzled over it for a moment before letting it pass. Being a woman alone in Seoul at night could be dangerous. He didn't doubt that she was weighing that in her mind right now. If it put her at ease, it put her at ease. "You've come to the right place. This club is a veritable hive of what noted alien propagandist Ben Kenobi would call scum and villainy." Dan may have left his cards on the table with that one. "The villainy, of course, being supernatural in nature. Rave culture is just an alien brainwashing ideology mutated into an 'edgy' pastime for youths who don't know better. It's a despicable tactic, but war is war."

Alright, she was almost certain that she'd spotted him at some sort of K-pop event. She and Chastity attended multiple events, though they certainly found it easier to get into CM Entertainment related events now that her cousin was dating one of the idols at CM. Was Ted using that to her advantage? Of course she was! A lot of people might think of her as stupid, but she wasn't that stupid. She could be a bit reckless and she wasn't that book smart, but she did have a good idea of how to get what she wanted.

She did presume that he'd been to events, or he wouldn't be asking that sort of question. "Duh, we try to go to all the events we can. Gives us more to react to for our videos. But a lot of it is just Chas and I watching the videos and saying what we think about them." It did get a little more detailed than that, of course. Often Ted and Chastity were blunt and to the point, but it wasn't uncommon for one or both of them to start a dialogue regarding certain videos and what the artists (and/or companies) making them were trying to get at with the videos and songs.

Upon hearing the name Ben Kenobi, Ted stared at Dan and blinked a couple of times. She knew she'd heard that name before..oh right! "Star Wars reference, nice. Don't know what you're talking about with aliens and shit. But it's cool that you're into Star Wars too." Maybe he was a trekkie? Oh wait..that was for Star Trek geeks, not Star Wars geeks. Warsie?

Either way, this guy definitely sounded like a nerd with his talk about aliens and shit. She couldn't even get on his case about Star Wars though, because Star Wars was awesome even if it did tend to attract nerds. And even if she couldn't understand some of the words he was saying. Not that she was going to admit that, though
